How can I help a defiant parent?

jeannegibbs Sep 2012
Ah. Good of you.

What are the specific situations? For example, does he resist taking a shower? Is it hard to get him to drink enough fluid? Does he refuse to use a walker when that has been advised? Does he refuse to allow a helper, such as a visiting nurse or a homemaker into his house?

There are some articles on this site about specific challenging behavior, and many people here have experience. Providing some example situations will get you more useful advice.

I am a mentor for a home care company and I was trying to get some helpful information for another caregiver. I am trying to be a good mentor.

Caring for someone who needs help but resists it is extremely challenging and frustrating.

Can you provide a little background? What are your parent's impairments? What kind of help is needed? Is dementia in the picture?
