Is an only son of a woman in NH responsible for any debts she incurs?

I have heard that many states have, or are, passing laws that will allow Nursing Homes to come to the children of people who owe money - to collect monies owed the Homes. If you have no way to control, or influence, the finances of an independant adult(parent), then why are you held to account for their debt? Can my MIL run up bills in a Nursing Home that my husband would then have to pay for, even though he does not have financial POA?

Check under "filial responsibility states" to see if your state is one where the children can be responsible for the parents' care. I am lucky that my state (AL) is not one, but our nextdoor neighbor state (GA) is.

I ve been hearing about "filial responsibility" lawsuits brought by the Nursing Homes against the surviving children to recoup monies owed.(ABC.com had an article) Couldn't believe the lawsuits were allowed to be presented, but some states have old(ancient) laws still on the books that allow it. Don't want to become chicken little about the topic, just trying to research so we have information to consider. Thank you for the resonses.
