Mom broke-fractured her hip. Should she have surgery or not? Can anyone with experience provide advice?

much appreciated

LME Jan 2011
I have never heard of a hip fracture patient not having surgery, unless the person had a heart condition which made surgery impossible. In that case, the hip would have to heal on its own, and, I would think that the person may not be able to walk again / may have to be bedfast until the hip heals, if it will, which could cause a whole set of problems. My aunt had surgery to pin the hip. In addition, this surgeon, the head of the ortho department in a teaching hospital, also does partial hip replacements on his elderly patients. He says they have a better outcome that way. Her hip healed beautifully. Please follow the recommendation of her ortho doctor.
