Is there VA financial assistance for a non-family caregiver?

EXPERT Ralph Robbins Jun 2012
The answer to both questions above is potentially yes. It depends on if the Veteran's eligibility status.
The Aid and Attendance Improved Pension is a needs based program and is designed to assist veterans with reimbursed medical expenses including the cost of home care, assisted living care, and other out of pocket expenditures such as durable medical equipment.
This is a needs based program and not all veterans will qualify.

Durable Medical Equipment may also be available to a veteran as a medical benefit. If the veteran is not already receiving health benefits from the VA contact your local VA medical center and have him/her enrolled. They will triage the veteran and provide what is needed. May be a very lengthy process however.

Review the VA web site VA.gov. If the veteran qualifies for the VA Aid and Attendance Benefit that may cover the payment for the home health caregiver. I currently work for a home health care company and we take private pay from clients who have the Aid and Attendance Benefit that is paid directly to them and we bill the client and they pay us directly. Please contact your VA social worker or Case Manager to assist your further. Blessings, Bridget

My Dad has been using a hospital type bed in his home for the past 6 yrs. Kaiser is now denying this benefit stating that he no longer qualifies. Does the VA has some kind of Durable Medical Equipment benefit?

I am a 100% service connected veteran and my wife requires InHome care. What programs are in place to help me with the burden of paying for the care for my wife. I have a company that is providing this service for my wife and I am getting close to exhausting all of my money. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
