Has anyone else dealt with the issue of reverse mortgages coming due upon a parent's death?

I agree that reserve mortgages are a scam they were suppose to let people stay in their homes but the more I hear about them the angery I get they were nver meant to saddle the children with expenses after their death you need to see an elder lawyer -maybe our financial expert on this site could address the whole concept of reverse mortgages,

My parents are living off their reversible mortgage right now, otherwise they would be at the poverty level. So far it's worked out fine for them, but then they don't need to be moving any time soon. When it comes to that though, we will sell the house and pay it off. We will sell it ourselves if we have to in order NOT to have to pay an Realtor.

Thank you. Yes, had POA; which ceased upon his death. He had a will and a revokeable trust. He had a reverse mortgage on his house so he could stay home and pay for his care - he had Parkinson's. We thought we had asked all the right questions when he did this three years ago. The house now has an upside down mortgage on it. What is outrageous however, is the $8000.00 interest, $4,000 in some sort of holdback fund that the company still has not explained to my satisfaction, AND the $14,000.00 in CLOSING COSTS!!!!!! All this on a $120,000.00 line of credit. We can neither afford to buy the house or even sell it (realtor's fees) so am being forced to let the mortgage company foreclose on it. My dad died seven weeks ago; and they are already moving in like vultures. I would warn anyone who has heirs to steer very clear of this - I have already had people tell me it is a scam, and sadly am believing that it likely is. Maybe if the economy were not in the tank we would feel that we had the options we started with. I guess I have to remember that it at least paid for his care to stay in his own home; and that was the most important part.

My condolences on the loss of your parent. I have not, but I would talk to an elder lawyer about what needs to happen next.

Do you have power of attorney for your parent?
