How can my elderly parents move into a nursing home without losing their home?

It can be sold, but the money would have to be spent down for their care before Medicaid would kick in again. Personally, if no one is living there, I would prefer to do this rather than paying upkeep, insurance, and taxes on the house if it will be a long time. If your parents are on Medicaid, they will not be able to pay these things. The family will have to pay them.

Hard to believe that's Medicaid's rule --that it cannot be sold. I would want that confirmed in writing. Personally, I don't believe it. Don't mean to be rude, but since you said it's confusing...

By Medicaid law the house cannot be rented out. The house can be sold at their death for Medicaid to recover their monies. But the fact they are both on Medicaid and the house is paid for we cannot rent it out or sell it, because it would knock both of them off Medicaid and all children are retired and live on limited income. It is so confusing and upsetting!

Why wouldn't you just sell the house? Or rent the house? And who has either parent's power of attorney . . . Or who is managing their money? That person could be found to be negligent if insurance were dropped. Sell the house!

My mother and father in law are both in nursing home and on Medicaid. We were told by the nursing home and I also called an attorney because their home is paid for that all expenses , taxes and insurance would have to be paid by the children until their death, because no monies could be written from their checking account for any expenses. Is this true. Also I would like to know if we do not keep insurance on an empty house could Medicaid come back and get the monies from the children if the house burns.
