How much savings is a spouse allowed to keep while trying to spend down for other spouse's Medicaid qualification?

Changes were made to the eligibility requirements on February 1 this year so check your State's Medicaid website.

This likely varies by state specific criteria and your particular circumstances. In the case of my parents, my mom began using Medicaid after burning through a long term care policy and being private pay very briefly. The nursing home received all her SS check. Dad kept all his SS, all his retirement pension, all their checking and savings account funds, their house, and one car. He had to sell one car. It wasn’t a financial crisis for him at all
