Mom's been in nursing home for 23 days. Should I bring her home for Thanksgiving.

My stepdad has dementia and keeps telling her that she is coming home soon but she is not. Waiting for Medicaid approval.

Mom needs to stay where she is. Join her at the nursing home for her Thanksgiving and take stepdad.

The nursing home will have a Thanksgiving celebration. In addition, you could order a meal from a restaurant and bring it to her to celebrate with the two of them.

No. Join her at his place for the meal. Facilities tend to truly try their best for meals that family is invited to. Your getting to know some of the more lucid members of the home isn’t bad either as they might become mom and stepdads friends. With dementia, why isn’t stepdad with her?

I agree to celebrate with her there at the facility (doesn't have to be on Thanksgiving Day). Tell her that she has to get approved for return by her doctor. You can tell her husband the same thing, if he remembers.

NO!!!

Nope. You can visit the day before and celebrate with her if you want to. That's what I will be doing this year with my mom.

No, not with this much denial afoot. Will lead to disaster and tears. Rather, take Thanksgiving to HER, and to others at her facility, in any small way you can.
