Mom on hospice with dementia, CKD and diabetes. I need ideas about diet.

She is a picky eater. Wants sweets, Jimmy Dean's brkfst sandwiches and hamburgers.

Hospice is end of life care. There is now no reason whatsoever that your mother should not eat what she likes in her last days on earth. Let her enjoy those things she loves, that she has likely long been deprived of.

Thank you for your honest and respectful answer. I appreciate that you didn't make me feel stupid about my question and that I was trying to deprive my mom of any enjoyment. I have been trying to give her the foods that she likes, but her tastes have changed. It seems as if the only thing she wants now are hamburgers, Jimmy deans breakfast sandwiches, fruit and yogurt. She will also drink the glucerna shakes. I didn't want to do anything that would worsen her condition. She also has pitting edema.

When my dad was on home hospice, we encouraged him to eat whatever he felt like having without restrictions. Hospice means end of life care, part of that care is enjoying things that bring pleasure and favorite foods are certainly among them. I wish you both peace

Let her eat whatever she wants, whenever she wants! You intend to restrict her diet when shes at end of life on hospice???? Now's not the time, my friend.

funkygrandma59 Aug 29, 2025
Wait...what??? You want to restrict your moms diet when she's dying?
PLEASE let the poor woman eat what she wants, when she wants and if she wants. Don't you think that's the least she deserves before she leaves this world for the next? I sure do.

In the last months of my husband's life, it was easier to just let him eat what he wanted and not worry about whether it was nourishing or healthy. He basically ate three foods -- steamed crabs, pizza, and buffalo wings. Even as they took him from our home to a hospice house (hospice at home wasn't going well), he requested someone bring a pizza to him for lunch! He ate four bites and that was the last food he ate. At least I know he got what he wanted. Focus on keeping mom content for the rest of her days. Give her whatever makes her happy.

I know it's hard to make decisions that seem "unhealthy" when a person is at the end of their life, whether or not the person is receiving hospice care. It might help you to keep in mind that at this stage of life, anything a person eats is providing them with nourishment.

My dad died with ckd and dementia. He enjoyed Big Macs and German sausages and wine until one day he didn’t. By a few days after he started hospice, he was asking only for pedilyte and occasional ice cream. That day will come for mom, but until it’s here, let her enjoy burgers and breakfast sandwiches.

On hospice? Let her eat anything she wants. No restrictions

Let her eat what she wants.
You can try to limit some things but really is it worth it to get in to a disagreement now?
You can try to put the burgers on low carb buns, get 0 sugar ketchup and do all the things that you know you should do but....
I doubt it will make a whole lot of difference.
Let her enjoy her burger, fries and, a milk shake
