Who first suggested to you that putting pressure behind your clavicle might suppress your hiccoughs? Have you discussed their being difficult, otherwise to suppress, with your doctor.
Sometimes our hiccoughs are a result of overeating. They are normally then quite easily tolerated, and of a brief nature. There are, however, hiccoughs involved with brain activity, that are of a different nature. They may be quite prevalent in strokes.
If you have hiccoughs frequently, or if they are difficult to control other than by the method you mention. I would suggest, as a nurse, that you discuss with your doctor.
Good question for your doctor, but thank God you have learned how to stop them when they do start up within 3 seconds. I'm glad you figured this out as I know how annoying hiccups can be when they seem to go a long time.

My friend’s husband’s hiccoughs were symptoms of an Aortic Arch Aneurysm .
Luckily they got him to surgery before it dissected .
