My friend is a 73 year old man who is disabled and is trying to care for a person who is around 60 years old , legally blind, weighs 330#.

This friend can no longer care for this person left in his care by an ex wife. The person is not a relative. He cannot care for himself and refuses to find help. My friend is thinking of walking out leaving him alone and suffer the consequences. What can I do to help him?

Yes you need to call APS and explain you cannot care for this person anymore but you don't feel you should leave him high and dry.

Refer him to Adult Protective Services in your area. That's APS. Good luck.

If the legally blind person is living in their own home (or are the main signer on an apartment lease), the "helper" should move out.

If your friend is not the homeowner or signed on the lease, they should definitely move out. Your friend is in no way obligated to care for this person who refuses to find help. As long as your friend remains the only solution, the disabled person will not look for other solutions. Your friend can always report this person to APS.
