How can we keep our father from getting out of his hospital bed at night? He also takes his penis out of his diaper and wets bed and floor.

Father is 86 with mid to late stage dementia. Very sweet, like a child, during day. At night he wakes up 3 times, very aggressive, tries to get out of his hospital bed (bars are up), but will first take his penis out of diaper and wets bed and floor. He does take a sleep aid and we do stop water intake at 6pm.

I am with Alva here. When they get like this, its time for placement. The worst thing for me was being woken up in the middle of the night and then trying to get back to sleep. Nap! My Mom never napped during the day. Actually, I need that sleep at night.

Ditto to the suggestions of an anti-strip onsie (buy them on amazon, also referred to as "adaptive" clothing for people with dementia). This may only be a temporary fix. Can the bed be lowered to the ground so that if he gets out he won't be able to stand up? Or, there are such things as buffers for the sides or a concave mattress. What is the sleep aid he takes? Is it OTC or prescription?

I think I have said already on today's forum that it may be time to understand that one on one care isn't sustainable when really safe care begins to require several shifts of workers, each having several workers to help.

Other than medications, which I must assume you have discussed with doctor and tried without much success, there is little to be done about this behavior, and living with it 24/7 simply isn't sustainable. I wish I had a magic wand and a better answer. Just don't have either of those things.

Try an antistrip onesie. These button up at night making it impossible for him to go anywhere but in the diaper.

If this hospital bed is part of hospice, you should have Ativan and seroquel to sedate him as needed.

Humm . . . sounds like he may need one of those bed strap harnesses, and an adult onesie pj outfit . . . when it gets this hard to deal with, unfortunately.
