She lives in CA makes too much money from SSI, can't afford a convalescent hospital or home care, what do they do? Who do they reach out to?

Thank you I appreciate the help. My friend has reached out to a social worker in the hospital. I hope they get the answer they are looking for.

I think you need to talk to someone at your Social Service office. If I read the following correctly, its not what she makes in SS but what needs she has.

"No, California does not allow Miller Trusts, also known as Qualified Income Trusts (QITs). This is because California has a medically needy program, which means that Medicaid applicants can qualify for benefits even if they have a high income as long as they spend their income on medical costs.

In states with medically needy programs, income trusts are not used because applicants can qualify for Medicaid by spending their income on medical care. These states include California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania."

I think all States should be this way. If all a person has is their SS and maybe a pension, they should be able to get LTC. With the Miller trusts, the overage put in them reverts back to Medicaid anyway.

The hospital, 911 as necessary, the ER. that should get her connected with a social worker. If she is unable to perform ADL's she may be able to get placed in a Medi Cal facility. if she is not able to thrive at home the SW should be able to get her connected with Medi Cal.

Sometimes people ‘pretend’ to be asking for a friend because they think they may be recognised by others who use the site. It is very very unusual for that to happen, and it is one of the reasons why we are not allowed to put identifying information in our posts. If this is true for you, please try again.

Please don't ask for a friend.
Please ask the friend to ask for themselves.
Let the friend know, when they join this forum, that they should complete the profile, and fill in their information. Let them know when they ask a question to give all the particulars in the situation.

No one can answer a vague question such as this without knowing the details. Sorry. Hope that your friend will check on all the information available to him/her. Wishing them the best of luck.
