Does anyone know if you can get dementia when you are 93 years old? My dad has been in hospice for 6 mo.'s and is telling some crazy stories.

Dad is very Lucid at times, but comes up with crazy stories. He is very stubborn and strong willed. I find myself weepy at times after my visit as it is very difficult to see him like this. Is this normal? Thank you for your comments. PS Hospice has been great!!

Could it be delirium instead of dementia?

Yes, “you can get dementia when you are 93 years old”. This is normal, and it is a part of the aging process. Your father should see a neuro doctor for the proper diagnosis. However, reading between the lines of what you wrote, I am assuming that your father has late onset dementia. Sadly, if your father has dementia, it will only progress and get worse. This is the time where you have to stay strong and accept his diagnosis so you can help him through his dementia journey.

Absolutely.

Age is a factor, but truth is, the longer you live the better the chance you will experience some level of forgetfulness--on towards full blown dementia. Or not. It's really a crap shoot.

It's normal, it's just not fair or fun.

Yes, everyday, you can get dementia at any age, though it is quite rare before 50s. You can indeed get late onset, and dependent of the type of dementia there is some "coming and going" of lucidity. I am sorry this is happening.
