Security camera at memory care facility.

My sister is in an assisted care facility on the west coast with no family or friends locally who could supervise her care and make sure she is getting proper treatment. She has vascular dementia. The NP has prescribed an antipsychotic drug which has made her slur her words and has slowed her verbal responses. Would it be appropriate to put in a camera in her room to monitor her in the facility?

It depends on the facility. You have to ask if it’s allowed.

Ask the facility if they allow it.
Hopefully though she does not spend a lot of time in her room. I would hope that staff comes to get her to participate in activities rather than being in her room.
Also if you are going to do audio as well check your / her State regulations on that some require 2 party consent for audio.
I would also ask the medical staff to check the dose of the medications being given, is there a lower dose or even a different medication that would accomplish the same goal but not result in slowing verbal response or slurring words.

I would express your concerns to the administration and I would request permission for a camera to monitor your loved on in these special circumstances. The fact that this new medication can have these side effects should also be a part of the care plan, so it is appropriate for the POA to discuss with the admins.

I sure wish you the best.
