Can people please suggest, how I can find out an area where I live for names/prices for CCRC's (Continuing Care Retirement Communities)?

I am particularly interested in CCRCs that begin at the level of Independent Living apartments and then go up from there (i.e. Assisted Living, Memory Care, etc.). It seems a lot start with AL. I have some very specific things I want to see about but the key thing is the price. I spoke with a nice social worker a short time ago who said they start at about $4000 per month minimum. Do I just start Googling? Thank you.
(Note: I'm putting this under the topic "Assisted Living" because I couldn't find another topic that fits, i.e. Senior housing, Independent housing, etc.)

Regarding "A Place for Mom," they are paid by the facility when someone who they've referred signs up for that facility. Not all facilities choose to be listed with A Place for Mom but instead do their own direct marketing. I'd done some research about facilities, including CCRCs, in our area, but thought A Place for Mom might have some additional places I didn't know about. Not only did they not give me any additional ideas but they did not include at least three of the best CCRCs and ALs that I knew about. In addition, most of the places they hooked me up with were ALs which did not have a continuum of care so if a nursing home (SNF) level were needed in the future you'd have to go out looking again. If you're looking specifically at CCRCs, here's a list I came upon that has places that are accredited by CARF, the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. https://www.carf.org/ccrclisting.aspx

In our area we have a very good place that is not technically a CCRC but has independent, assisted living, and memory care -- just not a SNF section; but they can do rehabilitation as ordered by a doctor because they have PT, OT, and I think speech therapy available which is covered by insurance on an outpatient basis.

I contacted A Place for Mom. They referred me to several facilities in my area and the marketing reps from those facilities contacted me. They will provide cost information if you just ask. You can also just google places in the location you’re interested in. Or ask around for recommendations. My mom is preparing to move into an independent living apartment. She’d heard about this place from a friend. Then unfortunately she had a fall and needed rehab so she chose this place. Apparently it met with her approval because not too long after she was discharged she was applying to move in. Now we’re packing up her house to put it on the market.

Don’t be too surprised if you can’t do price comparisons anonymously. You’re dealing initially with someone whose job is to fill the apartments. They’ll want your information so they can follow up with you until you make a decision. I never had anyone be pushy or anything but polite, though.

I think, yes, your search engine may be your best friend.

Some folks don't care for services such as A Place For Mom and consider them invasive on the amount of information they want on your financial assets profiles. HOWEVER for some they work well. My brother used such a service In Palm Springs area when his ex partner, for whom he was POA, required care and placement. He loved the fact he simply fed in the numbers and was taken around literally by car, to visit, to ask how things worked at each facility. He and his ex got so they thought it a fun way to spend the day!

There is nothing saying you have to choose a place you are shown. If there is any pesky interaction afterward one of our responders suggested that saying "Oh, he had to go on Medicaid" will keep any wolves from the door.

Or, again, google it, make some calls, take some tours and try to consider it "fun". Have a list of questions ready when you go. Best of luck.

Last year, when I was told my mom would need 24/7 care after a sudden illness and fall, I asked them for a list of facilities just on the south side of our city. The caseworker gave me a long list that I then used to research exactly what I wanted. One of the nurses even edited the list down to remove the ones that weren't good places. Many of them were CCRCs and that's what I ended up going with. I found that you can easily Google the information (continuing care retirement communities *city name* or *near me*). I tried reaching out to A Place for Mom but they didn't provide any information or help that I hadn't already been given.

The one thing that is darn near impossible to find is pricing unless you speak directly to the community directors themselves in an appointment.

Good luck!

I would call each place individually. Some CCRCs are month to month. Others require a substantial buy-in fee upfront in addition to monthly charges.
