Need transportation from St Paul Minnesota hospital to Maryland hospital. Any suggestions?

Stroke patient, unconscious w/trach.

I don't think this is doable unless you have a lot of money. A trach is tricky. You probably would need an RN to accompany you. TG she has medicare but her suppliment may not pay her out of state expenses.

I would say leave her where she is and see if she improves. If she improves, then maybe u can find an easier way to get her home.

My husband's aunt (bedridden but not unconscious) was transported from San Francisco to her daughter's home in Northern Oregon. She was there for about three weeks before they got in a fight and she demanded to be brought home again.

That little round trip cost her almost $60,000, so unless you have a LOT of money to spend, I don't know how you'd swing it.

Was your sister in a union? My deceased husband's union helps with medical transportation.

She has a trach. As far as driving for 15 hours, if she is on oxygen, it becomes a big NO. You will need a lot of tanks which may violate national transportation laws. Will she have a battery operated suction machine? Will she need IV meds? Will she need humidity to her trach or can she use an HME? Planning to use a Foley? Incontinence? Does she already have a facility that will accept her? Will her insurance transition across states?

Check out this thread from www.Bogleheads.org (a financial advice forum) which had a member a similar issue:

You're posting a question to an online chat forum of worldwide caregivers to elders, did you realize that? Nobody here is in a position to help you find transportation; all we can offer you is advice, maybe, but that's about it.

If medically necessary, your sister can be airlifted to this hospital in MD, but it won't be covered by insurance if it's not. If you require that she be medically transported, then you will have to finance that yourself.

Wishing you the best of luck finding this transportation for your sister.

A thousand mile journey can be achieved with a fixed wing medical flight. Fifteen hours driving with hired medical staff is too long for the drivers. This will be an out of pocket expense and be in the tens of thousands. Depending on her age, you could try a go fund me if she is well known in her police department.

Now according to your profile, it looks like the estimates you got were untenable. BTW, you mentioned your sisters name which violates her privacy. Please edit your profile because a hacker may connect her name to her location. Your name also needs to be edited to remain anonymous.

The drive is doable, they do it often for people going to see Dr Now in Houston.
