How do I apply to be a caregiver for my mother?

JoAnn29 May 2022
She has carpal tunnel in both wrists? This can be corrected with an operation. My husband has it and didn't know it until checked out for a pain in his shoulder.

I am reading this thinking your Mom has been taking advantage of you. 66 is young for "age decline". Your Mom is not disabled or in need of any care for ADLs. She does not qualify for help. I know people worse off than Mom who do for themselves daily. One friend is over 75 and suffers from RA, fibromyalgia and COPD. She lives on her own and takes care of herself. These are very debilitating and painful.

Please, look at your relationship with Mom. She needs to do as much for herself as she can. She should not be relying on a daughter who has a family, especially with 4 kids. This will get worse if you don't set boundries now. You are going to find yourself caring for her 24/7 with no life of your own.

You dont mention why your mother needs a caregiver. But from your profile it sounds like she might need some assistance with cooking and maybe light housekeeping due to her carpal tunnel? She would just need to pay you instead of someone else to do those things. It doesn't sound like she qualifies for or even actually needs a hands on full time caregiver at this point, especially if she is still working part time. Are you seeing other areas of decline that you are concerned about?

Jackie, why does your mother need a caregiver?

You have young children who should be your first priority.

Having carpal tunnel is not going to qualify her for public assistance.

If she needs care, she needs to pay you.
