My 79-year-old mother had an endoscopic surgery last week. Now she isn’t drinking much and is having a hard time swallowing. What can I do?

I would support the advice to check with the surgeon.  Even if it is a holiday weekend, doctors typically have phone support available through paid services, which can locate them at numbers we probably don't have.

I've had to call doctors a few times after hours, and never had a problem with the answering service reaching them quickly.

You need to check back with either the dr who did the endoscopy or the facility. I am sure that they tell you that difficulty swallowing can be normal, but if it seems excessive, you need to take mom back to get checked.

It could be that her throat is simply really irritated. It could be something worse.

Since it's the w/e. I wouldn't hesitate to take her to the ER, for safety sake. If she's feeling anxious about this, that will make the swallowing worse.

If it has been a week it is time to check with the doctor. There is often some swallow problem, some welling if the tube was in when anesthesia was wearing down and there was any swallowing or bucking at the tube, but this is an issue for a professional, not a Forum's guesswork. Wishing you the best.
