What will happen if you are on narcotics and not pooping?

funkygrandma59 May 2022
If you've tried all the laxatives, stool softeners, prune juice, Mira-lax, enemas and the like, you can ask hospice(if you have them on board)or a doctor to prescribe the drug Relistor. It is given as a shot and it is for narcotic induced constipation. It works wonders and usually within 15-20 minutes.
My husband was on fentanyl for over a year and a half, and as he neared the end of his life he became constipated as his fentanyl increased. His hospice nurse gave him the Relistor shot in his arm and within 15 minutes my husband was on the bedside commode pooping up a storm. He had to have it two different times and both times it worked like a charm.
Good luck.

Disempaction in the ER often enough. Thereafter stool softeners should be given with constipating medications to prevent this. The longer stool stays in the bowel the more cemented in it becomes due to the fact that the large intestine removes fluid from feces. Fleets oil retention enemas work very well, but the oil is a mess for days and leaks out everywhere, so incontinent pants are needed.

An impacted bowel. See https://www.google.com/search?q=impacted+bowel&oq=impacted&aqs=chrome.3.69i59j69i57j0i433i512l2j0i131i433i512j0i433i512l2j0i512l2.4361j0j7&client=ms-android-verizon&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

And FWIW, it hurts like the Dickens!
