How long does Hospice last?

My grandmother has been approved for hospice care. They said they reevaluate every three months. Is there a limit of time on hospice that Medicare Makes?

They will reevaluate in 90 days twice and then every 60 days until she passes or is deemed well enough to be taken off.
It’s not a situation like some of Medicare benefits where you only have so many days covered.

It varies from patient to patient, but hospice will keep someone on with them as long as they are seeing any kind of decline at their evaluations. Often times people won't bring hospice on board until the very end, so their time with hospice is much shorter than those who bring them on earlier.
My husband was under hospice care in our home for the last 22 months of his life, all covered 100% under my husbands Medicare.

My mother has been on it for six months already with no end in sight, but she's certainly not thriving. She'll likely be on it for the duration.

This is difficult to predict. Hospice is becoming more and more a way to get "more care" to patients. The physicians are fudging a bit in general when they predict expected demise in 6 months or less. So often our elders are in hospice when not actually actively dying. This is the reason for reassessment of need in 3 months. A thriving senior may not requalify. This goes individual case by individual case. Some elders requalify for as much as one and one half to two years.
