FLT If this is accelerated behavior, have your dad tested for a UTI. Recentjy my DH aunt, 94 with dementia, had really gotten a potty mouth and was rude to her caregivers. She went on hospice and had blood work done. Nothing showed up, but when treated for a UTI, her behavior really improved. She is less incontinent. Changing her own pull-ups without being asked and in general doing better. It is truly hard to appreciate how much difference it makes to get a UTI cleared up. But to answer your question, I instructed her aide to walk away when she would get ugly and come back after awhile and see if things were better. I would not respond at all if she said something uncalled for. Listen hard for anything that needs attention (pain, hunger, bathroom) and let the other go. Remember his brain is broken.
For myself I wouldn't be dealing with him at all. He would have to go to the same care he would be getting had he no children whatsoever. For many that is the case. Then I would visit when I chose, and maintain good cheer while able, then excuse myself and return home to a happy and content family.
FLTNdaughter, we really need a little more info to give you our best suggestions: - are you his durable PoA? - do you want to remain his caregiver and keep him in your home or are you seeking ways to have him transitioned into a care facility?
