Dad is at home with advanced Alzheimer’s, unable to do anything. Should we consider a facility?
He currently has caregivers coming in through Medicaid, 12 hours a day. However he’s not ambulatory and they can only do so much. At this point short of leaving him in the bed all day long should he be in a facility for advanced Alzheimer’s?
Of course that is an option. Round the clock care might be the best for him, or Alva's suggestion that it may be time to bring Hospice in.
Does he live with you or alone? That would make a big difference in the way I'd handle this.
Sadly, many seniors DO end up spending all or most of their day in bed. Having him living somewhere he can be helped up (if wanted) may make a difference in his mood.
Daddy has Parkinson's--and the last 6 months of his life he was 100% bedbound. But he was home and we had lots and lots of care. However, he was absolutely miserable. He had Hospice the last 2 or so months. He was able to make that decision on his own.
I'm going to say no. A nursing home will not provide care that's any different then what he has already. In fact, it probably won't even be as good. They will leave him in bed all day in a nursing home. He could probably qualify for in-home hospice services if he needs it.
It may be time to consider hospice care. Have you talked with the doctors? What is the prognosis? The time for 24/7 care is really for you to decide. Only you can know the daily impact of this on your own life.
