How do I get my husband with dementia to go into a memory care facility?

AlvaDeer Sep 2020
If the severity of the dementia requires memory care, then it is likely too far progressed to get any agreement from your husband, himself. His dementia is too far advanced to agree to such a thing.
This will likely have to be a decision made by you with POA or guardianship, conservatorship, and the help of his physician who diagnosed his condition. Wishing you good luck.

You make exactly the right point that if the dementia requires Memory Care the husband is no longer able to make the decision.

Even with a referral from a doctor (which is a great suggestion), no one wants to go into a facility. If you're looking for him to agree or acquiesce, it's most likely not going to happen so just saying to prepare your mind for this probability. Maybe you can consider an in-home male companion for him from an agency as a "stepping stone" to getting used to being cared for by another? Your profile says your husband is only 72...this is so young and I'm very sorry he has ALZ/D. You must do what helps you to help him so please take good care of yourself.

Talk with his doctor, get a recommendation and referral for your husband. The decision should sound like it’s not coming from only you
