Mother0730 Asked July 2020

My mother has end stage liver cirrhosis. Every time she gets ill I think it's the end. How will I know when it's truly the end?

Dear "Mother0730",
I know the rollercoaster ride you must feel you're on wondering if and when this is the end for your mom.
I agree with "JoAnn29" - please consider having hospice. A case manager could come to your home and assess her. We used hospice when my dad had Pancreatic Cancer back in 2004 and now my mom has hospice care after being in the hospital/rehab facility back in April after having severe dehydration and COVID-19.
Some other signs would be shallow breathing, restlessness, discoloration in the lower extremities, sleeping more, losing the ability to communicate, weight loss, the inability to eat or drink - as their body is no longer able to digest properly which means the body is starting to shut down. These would be signs that it is fairly imminent. Also, if you did use hospice, at least with ours they gave the family a booklet on the dying process and what happens during each phase i.e. months, weeks and days before they pass away. I will keep you both in my prayers!

Is she on Hospice? If not you may want to consider it. The nurse will be able to help determine how close she maybe.

I had a friend who pasted from this desease. The swelling of stomach was one of the last signs. Besides a yellow tinge in the eyes and skin.

I am so sorry to hear about your mom.

Just my thoughts … Don't focus on the end. Just treasure every day and minute you have with her and make it to be the best.
