What happens after your parent passes as far as will and assets?

My father passed away last week. I am out of the country and due to the pandemic was unable to be at the funeral, but helped organize and joined in an online video streaming. My mother passed away two years ago, and neither of my parents have brothers or sisters.
What comes next?
Do I wait for his elder law attorney to contact me?
My father had a designated POA (third party care provider) who was also designated as executor, and handled all his financial issues, so I have no idea of what his financial assets are. I only know he has left an apartment with stuff - some sentimental others worthy of donating.
Not sure what to do next, whether to wait to be contacted, reach out and inquire?

First, Probate cannot be opened until a certain number of days after the death. In my state I think its nine or ten days. Once Probate is filed, you should be contacted by the Executor. The Will is now public and you should be either sent a copy or able to request a copy. I would call and give him contact info.

Contact the executor to provide your contact information and ask if there is anything you can do to help. It has only been a week, certainly wouldn't want to appear too anxious. These things take time. My mom's took 2.5 years. Even under the best laid plans things will happen to slow the process.

I was assuming as OPs dad lived in an apartment they Executor is under some pressure to vacate it.

My neighbour has a rental. Her long term tenant and our family friend died in March. The estate has to continue to pay rent on the house.

My condolences to you.

I would contact the Executor and ask them your question.

Remember they will not know which items in Dad's apartment are sentimental to you. If there is something you are specifically interested in let them know now.

Thank you. Yes as you replied to the previous comment my current anxiety was around the apartment and its contents in the independent living facility. Thank you for your encouragement, I reached out to the executor to see what would be happening next.
