Need a service that will bring wheelchair bound mother to my house for holidays. She cannot transfer to car. Any suggestions?

How does that work?

In terms of transporting her, you can try checking with your public transportation system to see if they offer any services for the disabled. However, even if they do have that, a doctor usually has to clear the person to use a service like that AND it depends on how far your house is from where your mom resides. This would be low cost, but may or may not be an option.

Private ambulettes are costly, but would get her to your house safely. Then, your main worry would be caring for her once she's there.

If she lives in a facility, make sure she's medically cleared to leave for the day and be sure you understand every aspect of the care she will need while she's at your house. Sad as it is, some elders are not well enough for this type of thing. If you're planning on having her stay at your house overnight, that's another situation entirely.

Once you get her there I'm wondering if you have thought about how you will get her into your home, is your house wheelchair accessible?

I hired a wheelchair accessible van service to take my mother from the rehab SNF back to her Assisted Living community this past June. Some cab companies also offer handicapped vehicles for this purpose, so check out your local companies to see. I Googled "wheelchair taxi service" and came up with lots of choices. It was seriously expensive though; around $100 for one 5 mile trip. See if you can get them to agree to a fixed round trip price.

Also, how will you get her to the bathroom while she's at your house? Just something for you to think about..............

Good luck!
