Is it common for dementia patients to give up talking?

MargaretMcKen Feb 2020
This happened with my first MIL at the age of about 97, and she didn’t have dementia. I think the throat muscles can lose tone in extreme old age, so talking is too hard. Right at the end, just before she turned 100, she tried hard to talk to me but it came out as moaning sounds. I think that’s probably why she stopped earlier – she was not happy with how it sounded.

Every loved one that I have experienced with dementia lost the ability to form words and then they quit speaking. My granny could still show her love with her expressions, but my grandmother just went blank.

Yes, in the final stage of the disease, they often lose their ability to speak.

The Neurologist I took my step mother to said she has Front Temporal dementia, and that eventually she will stop talking, she is already going thru the process, I have no clue when she will stop talking entirely.
