My 94 yr old grandmother says shes not hungry and doesn't want to eat.

She will if I tell her to eat but only 1 time a day and very little amounts. She still uses the bathroom but doesn't walk around and can hardly support her own weight to stand up. She drinks lots of water but seems to choke on it when she drinks. She just sits watching tv and doesn't want to do anything else.

Choking on water was one of the first signs of my mother's dysphagia, she probably needs her fluids thickened and her solids modified in order to make eating and drinking easier.

Poor nutrition and lack of movement has consequences neither of you may be thinking of, namely frailty leading to falls leading to an inability to walk, which may ultimately lead to a nursing home. I think it's time to have a heart to heart talk about what she wants for her future and whether she is willing to make the effort to improve her diet and strength or if she is ready to give up (which is her right, but is a much more difficult choice for those who love her).

Are you in touch with your grandmother's doctor? Do you have her permission to speak to the doctor?

Your profile explains that you are her 24 hour live in caregiver. How long have you been looking after her? Do you know what her normal routine is, is the reason I ask.

Have you spoken to her doctor about it? The choking concerns me. I cut up mom’s food into very small bites because of dental issues but swallowing issues can arise in the elderly too.

Are there any other changes in her behavior?

Please discuss this situation with her doctor.
