Is constant couching a part of end stages of dementia /Alzheimer's? My mother is unable to have an MRI or cat scan due to a pacemaker.

She has been couching for the last 2 weeks. We are doing overcounter meds. No fever or other symtoms. Also has started needing assist in walking.. Could be due to back surgery done 15 yrs ago.. We have gone for steroid injections in past.

If you mean coughing she may have bronchitis, I would take her to the doctor ASAP.

She can have a CT Scan, but that is not likely to be needed. She may have simple bronchitis (not much fun) or pneumonia. She needs to see the doctor and get a chest xray.

I don't understand either. Do you mean crouching?

What is couching? Do you mean coughing? If so, I do not think coughing is a sign of end stage dementia at all; she probably has an illness like pneumonia or bronchitis. And CT scans are perfectly fine with a pacemaker, and so are many MRIs these days, although a simple x-ray would reveal pneumonia for your mother.
