If too old to work and have no money will Medicaid pay for nursing home for husband and wife to stay together?

JoAnn29 Aug 2019
Like said, for Medicaid to pay for a NH you have to fit a certain criteria.

Your wife is too young for SS. She has at least 4 more years. I also suggest that you call your county Office of Aging. You and your wife may qualify for Medicaid as health insurance. With Medicaid you get dental, vision and prescriptions. There maybe some Copays but that depends on income. Medicaid also offers homecare.

Make that call. It may surprise you what is out there u can take advantage of.

Medicaid won’t pay for a nursing home unless BOTH husband and wife qualify medically (MUST need nursing home level of care) and financially. If only one spouse qualifies for nursing home care then Medicaid will NOT pay for both spouses to stay together.

Nursing homes are a need based facility. There is lots of medical criteria that you need to meet before you can even be admitted to a nursing home.

I would start looking for senior housing that charges based on income.

Your profile seems to indicate that you are 59 with depression, have you tried everything to overcome this situation? You are still very young and could have decades ahead of you, don't just accept that this is it, fight for your life.

Your husband would need to be medically qualified to be in a nursing home, not just old.

Have you spoken to the local Area Agency on Aging? If you call 311 and tell them your zip code or neighborhood, they can tell you which agency the City contracts with, like Catholic Charities. They can help you with housing, food assistance and stuff like that.

Is your husband eligible for Social Security?

Medicaid doesn’t really look at your age but more at what assets you have. Their regulations vary from state to state so you will either have to call your local Medicaid office or actually apply for Medicaid. Be aware that there is a 5 year look back, so if some point in the last 5 years you gave anyone money, you’ll be denied. The only way to find out if you can get Medicaid is to call them or apply. We can’t say yes or no because we don’t know what your finances are.

True. We don't know finances are now (or in past 5 years) and we don't know medical condition. You have to be in a medical situation that requires this sort of care and your doctor can probably tell you if both of them are in that situation yet. Then the income comes in to play.
