Who will make decisions for me in the future?

I am 78 year old woman. My son lives with me but I know he will not be able to help me as he has mental health problems. It causes me anxiety that I do not know what I will do. My siblings are scattered around the US and will have their own issues.

I think that those of us who don't have someone they can trust to look after us need to be proactive in making our own plans with as much detail as possible. That may include making life changes that may not be necessary right now but will make life easier in the future, such as moving to a senior focused community that can provide additional care if needed. It should also include sitting with a financial planner and/or an elder law attorney to document your wishes and set up a financial plan. If you worry about your son all you can do is your best to connect him to mental health supports with his future independence in mind.

You may want to consult with an Elder Law Attorney. Ask if they will represent you in the event you cannot make your own decisions. You will have to be very clear as to your wishes. The attorney can also help you make arrangements for your son if those have not already been made.
