My mom received a refund check, has no bank account and is staying in a care center. How do I cash the check?

My mom received a refund check and has no bank account and is staying in a care center. I'm trying to find out how to cash the check for her. I don't have a bank account either?

How big is the refund check? Is Mom on Medicaid? Are you POA?

This is Moms money and the amt determines what you need to do with it.

Just have your mom endorse it & deposit it into your bank account. Then pull the cash. Do you have POA for financial matters?

OP does not have a bank account either

Find a family member or friend with a bank account (how have you both managed to avoid one?). There are several ways to try. The first is just to pay it into the bank account and see if it bounces. Our experience is that checks don't get looked at in detail so long as the figures tie up with written amount - signatures can be completely wrong, for example. The second is to go to the bank and explain the situation. Take some paperwork to back up the story - something from the care centre would be best. The bank might help. The third way is to get your mother to 'endorse' the check. This means you write 'pay xx yy' on the back of it and she signs. This used to be a common practice, but many banks now don't allow it.

If none of these work, you will need to send the refund check back, explain the problem, and ask them to cancel it and issue a new one in the name of your friend xx yy. They won't send you notes in the post, so this may be the only way to go.

PS
Thinking a bit more, it would be better to use the name of the care center instead of friendly xx yy for all the suggested options, if they agree. It would back up the story, and make it clear that it wasn't a trick for you to steal her money. The care center would do the banking into their own account, and take it off the bill or give cash. They may have had the problem before, and have already got a system working with their bank.

Do you have any friends that would do it for her. I am not sure if that is legal though?

Phone up the place where the check came from (or if you can get there, would be even better.)

Tell them the situation and ask what THEY can do to resolve the problem.

Good luck
