My patient with early onset Alzheimer's just recently decided not to get out of bed. Any suggestions?

My patient is only 64. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's 12 years ago. I've been working with her for 2 years. She's just recently decided not to get out of bed. Yesterday I couldn't talk her out until noon. Any suggestions? I've tried food, music, TV, and the promise of a car ride. Which I do.

Is she lucid? Talking to you?

Does she have family support who can encourage her?

Staying in bed is one of the worst things for a body, especially a body with an illness. You can't force her to get up and your tactics to get her up aren't working either.

Try to get some opinions from a doctor or nurse, your supervisor, her family, anyone who's in her life. If she continues to stay in bed it might be time for hospice.

I would bring this to her doctors attention. 12 yrs is a long time to have ALZ. She could be winding down to the end. How is her eating and drinking? Is she having swallowing problems. It could be depression.
