87yr old mum had shoulder replacement last week. Catheterised, didn't pu 12 hrs, now frequency & urgency, but no UTI. Any ideas?

Oops didn't know I'd get more space! Ok had antibiotics in Hosp but for symptoms, all tests were ok. Could symptoms be due to mechanical irritation of urethra/ sphincter? So sad as her shoulder is great and proud neat mum is hating being wet. She's very impressed with gel pads though!

My dad has issues like you describe every time he has a catheter. He usually spends some time unable to pee at all, then time unable to control peeing and constantly has accidents. So yes, catheters reek havoc on people this age

My day has to self catheterise once a week following turp 6 years ago. He is scrupulously clean & has so far avoided problems. I wonder if your dad needs a narrower/better catheter? Is there anyone you can ask?

Did you ask if your Mom should have shoulder surgery in a posting a couple of weeks ago?
Yes, your Mom could be experiencing some incontinence because of irritation from the catheter while she was in the hospital for the surgery.  I think that over time, the incontinence will get better.  Some people react differently to having a catheter inserted into their bladder and incontinence afterwards is one of the "side effects".

Thank you for that. Things are improving , during the day at least :)Happily her gp took this seriously & sent her for a bladder ultrasound, which indicated nothing horrible. It wasn't my earlier query about shoulder replacement but hers is doing well so far, early days of course!
