My mother had a stroke. Does the 100 day Medicare coverage include time spent in an acute rehab hospital also or is that stay counted separately?

I think you are confusing "acute care" hospital and rehab.

Rehab is not acute care.

The max 100 days is based on the start of the stay in rehab...and continued improvement. I have not known of a stroke victim that was still making progress sufficiently after 30-40 days to allow Medicare to continue payment t remain.

After discharge, there is continued in home or in NH care...OT, PT, ST. Again..there are annual Maximums and also the requirement that improvement continue.

Hi Larry,
So sorry to hear about your mother's stroke. Here is a link to a booklet explaining the 100 Days rule. medicare.gov/Pubs/pdf/10153.pdf I believe the 100 days starts when she is discharged (after at least a 3 day stay) from a hospital, and enters rehab (often referred to as a skilled nursing facility).
Good luck and remember, you can ask to speak with a discharge planner or the admit person at the rehab to get more info.
