Holiday gifts for NH staff?

My stepmother is in a SNF and I'd like to recognize the staff there. Don't want to do cash or gift cards because someone is sure to be left out and can't afford it.

I used to work in nursing homes and I know that at the holidays many families bring candy, cookies, etc. and sometimes it's too much at once. Ideas for something else?

National Nursing Home Week in May is another great time to recognize and thank the nursing home staff for the care they are giving your mom.

I bought Subway sandwich party platters for the employees of a 50 bed nursing home and placed the platters in the employee lounge refrigerator. I labeled 1 1/2 trays for the nursing day shift, labeled one tray for the other departments working day shift, labeled one tray for nursing evening shift and half of a tray for the night shift.

Fruit basket seems to be a good idea.

I brought in treats several times during the year. Sometimes they were homemade goodies. I'd bring in two trays, and ask that one of them be put in the staff lounge during the night shift.

Costco has a very nice jar of imported chocolates this time of year, each individually wrapped. My sister and I would buy several. Always one for the kitchen staff, along with a note about how much Mom likes the food. (The head of the kitchen seemed genuinely moved. I think that department gets overlooked often.) One to the physical therapy staff if mom used those services recently. One for the Social Activities director, asking that be shared with the volunteers. One for the DON and two to the nursing station, again asking to be sure some went to the night shift.

Whatever you decide to give, give it this week and avoid the rush!

People have mentioned that healthier edibles like a fruit basket can be a nice change from all the candies and cookies.

Another suggestion is to donate to the employee holiday party fund, if there is one at your facility.

Perhaps you could also bring in the cookies, fruit platter or whatever at another time of year?

Hi KnittingDtr,

It is very thoughtful of you to think of the staff during the holiday season. Maybe a floral arrangement or a beautiful Christmas plant would also be appreciated.
