What is the difference between dementia and Alzheimer's?

Your father has been the caregiver, but now he himself needs care. Mother has dementia and, with her broken brain, is a risk for injuring your father.

This situation needs some outside professional intervention. Start with a needs assessment for each of them. To arrange this, call either your Area Agency on Aging or their county's Human Services Department. Once their needs have been identified, then sources of meeting those needs can be researched.

Concerned, if mom is getting violent toward dad, call 911 and have her transported to the ER for testing. She might have a UTI, as FF notes, or she may need strong meds to deal with her agitation.

If she is displaying violence towards dad, she can no longer be his caregiver. He needs to be in a care situation.

concernedat50, if your Mom is getting angry, pushes and hits, have her checked for an urinary tract infection [UTI]. UTI's in elders is much different than UTI's in much younger people.

yes. The main caregiver is my father. Unfortunetely , he has cancer, and broke both hips. now one is metal and the other is screwed together. He is weak and cannot walk fast or easily. She gets angry and pushes and hits him. It does not happen often, but it has become worse as she gets sicker
