My husband with dementia (MHwD)(88) no longer drives; car is in both his name and mine. Should I renew his license (for ID) and do I need to change insurance to say that he's no longer driving? Or should I take his name off the registration (which would necessitate insurance change)?

Thanks for asking this. I was wondering if I should call the insurance company to remove my spouse. Had no idea the rates would go up.

i live in Virginia. My wife stopped driving two years ago. She has dementia. When I called my insurance company to remove her name, I was told the premium would increase. I was flabbergasted and thought the phone rep made a mistake. I called several days later and spoke to different rep. Same answer.

Removing his name from the insurance will actually cost you more money because of the higher single rate. You would also have to show his surrendered drivers license to drop him. He can get a state issued ID without having to pass a test or vision screening.

You can get a State ID from the DMV.
You probably don't need to change the insurance, if he's not driving at all, and not likely to get the keys and sneak out. But, if you want to change the insurance, then you should take his name off the registration as well. You might see a cost savings by removing him as an insured driver. If there is a small chance that he might get in the car and drive somewhere, keep the insurance for him!

From my experience, Insurance companies are reluctant to remove anyone from the household, just in case they might drive the vehicle. I had to convince my insurance company that my husband is bed-bound, with partial paralysis and dementia, and could not even get in the car without my help.

In CO too, when my husband's driver's license needed to be renewed I got a state ID, no cost. I called USAA to take him off the insurance and I would lose the multiple driver discount so I left him on.

Get your husband only a state ID. In CA it’s called a senior citizen photo ID. Remove him from the car ownership, and if on the insurance, remove his name there too.

In CO taking the no longer driving spouse off the auto insurance did not change the premium. That seemed unfair.

Does your state offer an ID that isn't a drives license? Here in Virginia we can get an official ID.

I think you need to go to your local DMV office. Different states have different laws. You may need a doctors letter saying he now has Dementia. You may have to have him with you. You can change his license to an ID only. The registration you will need to ask the DMV about. Call your insurance company about taking him off the policy. Like laws, Insurance companies are different too.

Don’t renew as a DL, he needs a state ID only. Call your DMV to find out the process.

Yes, take his name off the insurance as a driver.

If his name is on the car title as “and” I would also take his name off of it.
