Can I get paid for taking care of a parent?

I live with my father and he is needing constant help. Can I get paid to stay home and care for him?

Melody, the vast majority of caregivers do not get paid for taking care of a parent.... unless the parent can pay you from their retirement fund.

One option would be to see if your Dad qualifies for Medicaid [which is different from Medicare].

Depending on your State "Medicaid" programs, they may or may not have a program where one can get paid for caring for a parent.... but note, if pay if offered the pay would be very minimal. Medicaid might have other programs that could help with care, such as an Aide to visit once or twice a week for a couple of hours, to give you a break.

You mentioned your Dad needs constant help, Medicaid would pay for your Dad's full care in a nursing home. I realize that may not be a choice you want. You do need to think of your own future. Yes, it's a tough decision.

Yes, if Dad has resources to pay you, a caregiver agreement is necessary.

Call the Area Agency on Aging, they can help to identify what programs are available in your state.
