Can I get some kind of assistance to help pay for someone to take care of my dad at home?

I don't want to put him in a rest home.

Call your local Office of the Aging. Should be a county thing. They should have a list of resources. Where I live, they have aides if you income is a certain amount. In some states, they have where a friend or your can be paid for his care. They go thru a course.

Just want to comment that the VA takes a long time to get your help. If Aids and Attendance they have to have served during Wartime and you need the records to prove that.

As above, check with Medicaid if your father has no funds, also the VA if he served in the military. If on the other hand your father has funds, you need to ensure that you have durable power of attorney to use his funds for his care. Then use his money to hire a caregiver.

You have left a lot unsaid. Do you live together? Are you wanting occasional care or 24/7 care? Do you work? Have other family who could help? Do you have a spouse and/or children?

You might be able to get some help through Medicaid if your dad is low income or through the Veterans Administration if he is a veteran with certain conditions that served at certain times. You can look at the articles in the Veterans Section and medicaid section in the below blue box area of the site. Please note, Medicare doesn't pay for 24/7 care at home. Medicaid doesn't pay for 24/7 care at home other than very specific locations (New York City). And in most states, low income means less than $2000 in assets, a low monthly income from social security or pension, and no money transfers to family or friends for the past 5 years. Hope you can find some respite. check with your local area agency of aging to see if there are programs in your area with volunteers or your church to see if they have help available.
