Can I have my mother's drivers license called in?

Her vision is bad - cataracts and she keeps losing her keys. Dangerous driving. Refuses help!

We are going to try sending a letter to her doctor first, and see what happens after that. Thanks for the reply.

Sorry to hear what you are going through. I know its tough. My dad also wanted to drive and in the end it was his doctor that told him no. I didn't want to be cruel, but I had to cancel his insurance, did not renew his driver's licence and took the keys away.

We are facing this issue with my mother-in-law. She doesn't share any medical information with us, but I doubt her eyesight is as good as she pretends it is. She is also profoundly deaf (bought new hearing aids and either doesn't wear them or they don't work), so she would never hear a siren on an emergency vehicle. She hasn't had any accidents that we know of, so we don't know what to do. She is 87.

Go to your State's DMV website. At least for NY, it gives detailed instructions on how to report a person you believe whose license should be reviewed.

Can you get her doctor to do this? Much more weight is given to MD referrals.
