How do I cancel Mom's credit card?

My mother is in a NH and hasn't used the card in a few years. I have DPOA, and want to cancel her card to prevent any kind of problems with someone stealing her information. How do I do that?

One can also "freeze" a parent's credit by going on-line to the credit bureaus. That helps by knowing that no one can can use your parents credit to buy a car, get a loan, or get other credit cards. The cost is around $3-$10 per credit bureau, and some States there is no charge at all. I also have my own credit on ice.

For more info go to Clark Howard - personal-finance-credit, credit-freeze-and-thaw-guide and there are other really good financial advice on his website, and scams to watch.

Thanks for your answers. There hasn't been a balance on it for about two years. I'll do as suggested.

If you want to be totally sure...send a copy of the POA with a letter to close the account. Send a letter to all three of the credit reporting agencies....along with a copy of your POA

Ask that a flag be put on her file...no new accounts to be opened.

Call the credit card company. They may request a copy of the POA but you should have no problem canceling it if no balance. If a balance than you will need to prove she has no money to pay the bill. You are not responsible for her debts.
