Fisherman Asked May 2017

Is there a process/procedure or whatever that can be invoked to order an Alzheimer's patient into institutional care?

In my situation, its just my wife and me and her dementia worsens constantly. What should I do? How should I proceed? We are both on SS and Medicare, our other resources are limited. All advice appreciated. We live in Texas.

Yes, there is. What you'll need to do is have doctors say that she needs supervision in a nursing home for people with Alzheimer's. Since you don't have money, you can apply for Medicaid with your state. You're the community spouse, so they will let you keep your home and possessions and a portion of the household income so you will not be impoverished. I know that you probably dread having to do these things, but reading what you wrote, I know that it is time. Good luck! You can check on how to apply for Medicaid at www.Medicaid.gov or check with your county's Dept. of Human Resources.
