JPOOLE Asked May 2017

My parents pay me to care for them in their home due to medical conditions. Can they deduct this on their taxes?

If the care is prescribed by a doctor and is medically necessary, I would think so. But, check with an accountant or elder law attorney. I hope you have a care agreement. May be one of the prerequisites.

I agree with cdnreader above about checking with a tax person or accountant.

My Dad was able to deduct his professional caregivers who were from an Agency because he had a written contract with the Agency, plus he was a fall risk which his CPA said was acceptable.

Hi Jpoole,

I would check with an H and R Block rep or an accountant about this question.
