In my state also a very appropriate place to start is to ask for a needs assessment to be done by the Social Services department. (There is sometimes a wait for this appointment. The sooner you start the sooner you'll be interviewed.)
Have you applied to see what services you may qualify for? I'm not sure what state you are in, but, in NC, our county dept of Social Services processes all applications for all kinds of services, such as Medicaid, reduced electric bill, food stamps, and all other services. I'm not sure about housing options, but, I'd ask about that as well. I hope you can find some help.
