How do I know exactly what was left to both of us from my dad's will?

I am not executor to my dad's will. I have a very shady sister. How can I find out?

If it's filed for Probate, a copy of the Will should be in the court file. If not, see an attorney about opening up the case. In most states, once a case if filed for Probate, all immediate heirs, like children and spouses are to be notified by mail, even if they are not listed in the Will.

Contact your County Probate Court, as a Will needs to be filed with the Court once someone passes [at least here in the States].   Sometimes this can take many months before anything is distributed.

Hopefully your Dad used an Attorney to put together his Will, thus the Attorney would have talked to Dad about what he wanted.   Usually the Attorney can quickly tell if an adult child is trying to sway what is in the Will, and will ask that adult child to leave the room.

As to find out what is in the Will, are you able to ask your Dad for a copy of the Will?   If not, you will need to wait until your Dad passes and the Attorney and/or Probate Court calls in everyone who is listed in the Will.

The best thing is to think you will not receive anything, then be pleasantly surprised if there is something for you.  Some elders will give their estates to charity.

You cannot find out until after dad passes. Though you could retain an attorney to pursue full disclosure from your sister. Or has your dad passed?
