How do I prepare for long term care at nursing home with Medicaid?

My mom suffered a stroke in August 2016 and she has been in a nursing home. She is set to go into long term and has been approved for Medicaid. As her PPA what steps do I have to do with SSI check and pension? Also do I call all her bills or write letters saying she can no longer pay?

Medicaid application has been approved. She has been short term which allowed me to pay her bills. The NH said that now she is long term dont pay her bills anymore. I may have to consult with the social worker on how I go from here. Already started notifying her bills that she can no longer pay.

Are you mom's representative payee for SS? I understand that SS does not accept POA as sufficient authority.

Have you consulted with an eldercare attorney on the Medicaid application? If yes, then s/he might be a good source of information on how to proceed. Otherwise, you might talk to the business office at the NH.

Others here have indicated that it is better to keep yourself as mom's rep payee for her income stream and pay the NH directly, in part because if you ever need to move her to another facility, you won't have the wrest control from them.

Hoping others with more experience in this area will be by to answer more astutely.
