Who can I contact to have an evaluation done to determine and document a person has dementia?

Generally you start with the person's primary physician. If the person does not have a regular doctor, hasn't seen a doctor in years, etc. then try to find a geriatric specialist for the primary care provider.

If the PCP suspects dementia, usually there will be a referral to a specialist such as a psychiatrist or a neurologist, for further testing.

There are often two problems with this scenario: 1) getting the person to agree to see a doctor, and 2) most people with early dementia can "showtime" -- put on a good act in front of a doctor.

If you have trouble with getting a loved one to a doctor, post again with that question, or do a search on that topic and read previous suggestions for that.

To avoid the showtiming issue, make a list of your specific concerns -- the behaviors that make you suspect dementia -- and share it with the doctor. Also attend all sessions with the doctor.

Good luck!

Contact that person's primary doctor, he/she can recommend a specialist.
