Can you get help putting in a ramp or shower for aging seniors?

We have three seniors in our home. They need a ramp to get into the house safely. It is very difficult for them to get in and out of the shower safely. Is there an agency which can help with costs of these renovations so they can stay in their home?

Harwood, our Area Agency on Aging contracts with a handyman who does small repairs and safety improvements at a greatly reduced rate. It might be the same in your area. One of the seniors in your home would need to meet the income qualifications, but they are not as strict as, say, applying for Medicaid. And it is not as rigorous a process.

My grandparents had very limited income when they moved into the home we bought for them. We owned the home but the handyman installed the safety bars for them at very low cost and did a nice job.

In case any of the seniors is a veteran, the VA may pay for the outdoor ramp as part of his or her benefit. A while ago Garden Artist posted about several veteran discount programs through places like Lowe's. It is worth checking around a bit.

Talk to your municipal building inspector. Often they have connections to volunteer groups who will put in a ramp. Bathroom remodeling is not funded as far as I know of, but it won't hurt to ask.
